Dave Rogers Named WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief of the Race in Bristol
Roswell, Ga. (August 24, 2010) – Dave Rogers, crew chief for the No. 18 Doublemint Toyota, and driver Kyle Busch, has been named the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Race following Saturday’s IRWIN Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Rogers was under a lot of pressure going into Saturday’s race as his driver had won the Camping World Truck Series race and the Nationwide Series race on Wednesday and Friday nights. The team’s goal was to make this a trifecta weekend.
“Dave made some really good adjustments this morning and thought about it over the night to get us a good car for today,” said Busch. “This Doublemint Camry was awesome, and it goes back to good teamwork.”
Well, Rogers must work well under pressure. The Rogers-led team prepared a near flawless car for Busch who, although he qualified 19th, had no issue carving his way up through the field in no time. Leading four times for a race-high 282 laps, he worked his way up into second by lap 136. Securing the lead from Jimmie Johnson on lap 172, Busch never looked back.
Busch continued to battle with front-runners Jamie McMurray and David Reutimann. Following a call from Rogers for a quick wedge adjustment on lap 399, Busch won the race off pit road. He stole the lead position once more from Reutimann on lap 429, and with a 2.49 second lead over the field, he began to close in on history.
Busch became the first NASCAR driver ever to win all three series races in one weekend.
“I can’t say enough about this team. This Doublemint Camry was awesome today. What a great racecar,” said Busch. “Flawless pit stops. These guys were awesome.”
“What a solid team,” said WYPALL Wipers crew chief representative Jeff Hammond. “Dave and Kyle have great chemistry and it really paid off this weekend!” WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief Results Jeff Burton and the No. 31 Caterpillar Chevy led by Todd Berrier started and finished from the same position – 16th. After gaining a few spots in the beginning, Burton reported to Berrier that the splitter was hitting the racetrack surface, making it difficult to maneuver through the turns.
“The car was tight all night,” said Burton. “The setup we had in the car made it difficult for me to turn through the corners and each adjustment we made during pit stops didn’t seem to help it. Obviously, we learned a lot of things tonight but finishing 16th was certainly not the finish we were looking for.”
Marcos Ambrose and the No. 47 Bush’s Baked Beans Toyota team, led by Frank Kerr took off from the 22nd position and immediately felt loose. Ambrose communicated this to Kerr and who then called for four tires, fuel and a round of adjustments on Ambrose’s first stop of the evening at lap 57.
Ambrose was able to work his way up into the top 10 but debris caution forced him back again, finishing a disappointing 20th.
WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief Team Berrier, Kerr and Hammond, along with representatives from the WYPALL Wipers brand, serve as the panel for the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief Challenge and vote for the weekly crew chief winners. In addition to the $500 check, the winning crew chief will receive signage to announce the win on their pit box the following week. The crew chief with the most weekly wins will be honored as the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Year and will be presented a $20,000 check at season’s end.
